Conscious Leadership with Greg Cortopassi

Key Learnings
Submitted by Jessica Garrow, RFL Board Chair

“For things to change I must change”

On August 26th RFL welcomed its 24th annual class.  The class, like all other before, begins with a 2-day retreat with Greg Cortopassi.  The opening retreat is many things: an opportunity for strangers to get to know one another, a place where trust is created, a time for both fun and reflective activities, an opportunity to contemplate how to bring Greg’s teachings into our lives, and there’s always a lot of hugging.

As I sat with this group of 29 amazing people, I was struck by how Greg is able to create an atmosphere of trust, compassion, and cohesion so quickly.  One statement stuck in my mind repeatedly:  “For things to change, I must change.”  It’s a simple statement, but packs a punch.  We all have different experiences, backgrounds, and filters that color our view of the world.  If I am concerned or frustrated about a situation, I have the power to change it.  Others may be involved in the situation, but as much as we might want to control the actions of others we can’t - we can only control our own.

The retreat brings different ideas and concepts to the surface for each person.  The final activity of the weekend had each person highlight the one thing they were taking away and going to bring into their lives.  Many of the class members talked about how trust between people is the foundation of good communication and that they can control how they act in the world and create trust with others.

In just 36 hours, the class was able to create a high level of trust.  One of Greg’s final thoughts was:  “If you were able to create such a high level of trust amongst a group of strangers in such a short period of time, think of what you can do in your lives outside of this class experience?”

As the class embarks on their RFL journey I look forward to seeing how they will continue to build on the trust and cohesion created in the retreat – both in their class and in our community

"I loved meeting people at the retreat and enjoyed building trust and new relationships amongst us. I only wish we could do this more often."

NEW EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR READY TO LEAD RFL

As you may have heard, Roaring Fork Leadership is welcoming a new Executive Director, Andrea Palm-Porter.  As the new executive director of Roaring Fork Leadership (RFL), Palm-Porter will be instrumental in guiding the non-profit as it expands beyond its core leadership educational program to provide meaningful opportunities to practice and apply what has been learned for the betterment of our communities. The board is very excited to welcome Andrea as our Executive Director.

“My experience guiding organizations into new markets and finding new opportunities, most recently as Director of Revenue Development for Colorado Mountain News Media, is directly transferable to the challenges facing RFL as they broaden their mission,” says Palm-Porter.  Palm-Porter replaces Terri Anuszewski officially on September 1, but has been working alongside Terri to enable a seamless transition since August.

Palm-Porter’s career trajectory is impressive.  She began as an Advertising Manager with Colorado Mountain News Media and quickly moved into the Publisher role at the Glenwood Springs Post Independent.  She was able to accomplish this feat by never turning down challenges and being passionate about achieving marketing, communications, and partnership building goals.  As a graduate and former board member of the Vail Leadership Institute, alumnus of the American Leadership Forum, and a participant in past RFL community class sessions, Palm-Porter is just as passionate about leadership.

Please join us in welcoming Andrea!  You can contact Andrea at: andrea@rfleadership.org, or 970.922.6035.

Mastering Performance

Roaring Fork Leadership is offering ‘Mastering Performance’ by Jonathan Clark.

This 3-day interactive seminar is for executives, managers and individuals at all levels of an organization who are committed to taking individual performance and partnership to breakthrough levels. It is for those who seek more joyful and productive ways to lead their lives and businesses.

In this program, we are not asking you to learn new skills, add to what you know, or even modify your style. Rather, we are asking you to inquire into the whole way you identify yourself, the world, and the relationship between the two. As a result, participants get to see their current circumstances from an entirely new perspective which instantly provides an access to new possibilities for themselves that simply did not occur from the previous point of view.

The following are some of the results participants report.

•Breakthroughs in individual and group performance.

•Breakthroughs in communication and working relationships.

•More efficient meetings—less wasted time.

•A renewed sense of freedom to create and achieve inspiring futures.

•People are more self-motivated and effective in their jobs.
•An alleviation of stress.
