Critical Thinking for Success with Scott Halford

Speaker, author and educator Scott Halford was back with RFL again taking us through the paces of critical thinking. Not just surface thinking, but what it means to really think. He emphasized that most of us have great thoughts but it’s the safety of the environment that predicts whether we’ll share them, debate them and ultimately change those thoughts for the better.

The very essence of critical thinking requires you to be able to objectively examine your own and others’ thoughts. One of the hallmarks of an excellent critical thinker is to be able to spot, convey and change flawed thinking processes. Flawed thinking is often the culprit in problems that arise in projects and issues.

Critical thinkers are able to bring to the forefront of their thinking the questions that stay in the background for average thinkers. Critical thinkers can bring them to the conscious mind, label them and follow them to a logical conclusion. They are skilled at doing this for both themselves and while listening to the thinking or questioning path of another.

After critical thinkers master the process for themselves, they can then use it to track the line of questioning made of them by others. This helps to keep answers focused and on target.

This year’s class had this to say about what they learned in the class:

·         “I liked the science based presentation with both theoretical and practical based application.” Will Roush

·         “I learned the importance of meditation for brain health, as well as giving my brain time to download rather than just racing from meeting to meeting or activity to activity.” Bonnie Muhigirwa

·         "One of the best sessions I have had the pleasure to learn from during RFL." Christina Brusig

·         “I loved being exposed to new ideas and new tools to allow me to make my life & relationships more meaningful.” Kellie Ulrich

Scott Halford’s book recommendation, “Be a Shortcut: The Secret Fast-track to Business Success”. It helps people to understand how to increase their value no matter what they do by focusing on the combination of emotional intelligence and mastery. It’s fun, light and has great lessons!

Applying insights from social cognitive neuroscience to enhance leadership effectiveness

SCARF Self-Assessment is a free online self-assessment tool (recommended by Scott Halford) that gives you insight into the five domains of the SCARF model, and indicates the importance each domain currently has in your life.

Understanding which of these five domains are key drivers for you increases self-awareness as to why you (and others) behave as they do in certain social interactions.

Knowing more about your own reactions leads to better self-regulation and gives you more options when dealing with other people.
